The European appearances took a toll on Paich’s personal well-being and it is in his best interests to forego the impact the rigorous wear and tear being on the road brings until he is feeling 100 percent. Focusing on his health and looking forward to returning to the road when ready to do so.” is his plan.

David shared that, saying that was a difficult decision, it would be a complete understatement. He hopes people will understanding his need to be home. He is looking g forward to join the boys again on stage ASAP.”In the absence of the founding keyboardist’s presence on the tour, Dominique “Xavier” Talpin (Prince) will be sitting in for David performing with Toto.

David Paich Toto

A prolific writer of chart-performing songs, Paich wrote or co-wrote such tracks as “Hold the Line”, “99”, “Lowdown”, “Lido Shuffle”, “Georgy Porgy”, “Rosanna”, “Hydra”, “Holyanna”, “Pamela”, “Got To Be Real”, “Lady Love Me (One More Time)” as well as “Miss Sun”. Also, he performed lead vocals on the Toto hits “Africa”, “Lovers in the Night”, and “Stranger in Town”.

Paich remained with Toto from the beginning of the band in the year 1977 until 2004, then performed on only a few shows until their disbandment in 2008. Session keyboardist Greg Phillinganes joined Toto in the year 2003 as an additional keyboardist for both studio projects and tour dates. In the year 2010, Paich resumed performing with Toto, and until mid-2018 was one of the band’s keyboard players, along with fellow original member Steve Porcaro.

With Toto in between legs of its 2018 40 Trips Around the Sun (40th anniversary) tour, the band announced via its official website on 20 July 2018 that Paich “will not be performing on the band’s planned North American tour (lasting from July 30-November 17).

The recent European appearances (February 11-April 8) took a toll on his personal well-being… He plans on focusing on his health, and looks forward to returning to the road when ready to do so.” Guitarist Steve Lukather later stated that Paich’s absence stemmed partially from an apparent seizure he suffered during the band’s early 2018 European tour.

Paich returned to the stage with Toto for the opening and closing shows of their year 2019 US tour, reportedly their last, on September 20 in Los Angeles and October 20 in Philadelphia. In both instances, Paich joined the band at the end of the show to play keyboards and sing on “Africa” and “Home of the Brave.” However, the band dissolved by the end of the tour before he could make a full return.

David Paich Africa

David Paich receives Farewell from as Returns on ‘Africa’

Toto’s 40th-anniversary tour has stretched over two years and the band’s guitarist, Steve Lukather, says the band’s performance on Oct. 20 in Philadelphia, Pa., was their last. If that’s indeed the case, it was fitting that co-founder David Paich – who took what essentially became a permanent leave of absence in 2018 due to health issues – joined the band at the evening’s close to sing “Africa.” Watch the performance below.

While on tour in Europe in 2018 during Toto‘s extended “40 Trips Around the Sun” tour, Paich, the keyboardist who wrote or co-wrote the group’s biggest hits “Hold the Line,” “99,” “Rosanna” and “Africa,” took ill. As guitarist and founding member Steve Lukather told the Pennsylvania newspaper, The Morning Call, “He just fell out on the bus – had some sort of a seizure or something like that. We went home and he had to retire from touring because of his health.

“He can sing. He’s up and about and he’s happy and he’s walking around. But he’s not built for speed anymore. This kind of style is far tougher than individuals assume it’s.”

In July 2018, the band acknowledged that Paich wouldn’t be joining them for their next dates.“The recent European appearances took a toll on his personal well-being, and it is in his best interests to forego the impact the rigorous wear and tear being on the road brings till he’s feeling one hundred pc.”

As for Toto coming to an end, Lukather told The Morning Call: “We’re calling it a day, kinda. We’ve had some horrendous litigation. Horrendous, horrendous, awful, mean, you-gotta-be-kidding-me kind of lawsuits, and we lost the suit. So it beat us down.“So we gotta get away from this. We gotta get away from the whole thing. It’s just been tainted by a psychotic human being. That’s all I can say. “But, you know, we worked really hard and this is a great way to … I can’t say we’ll never…” On Oct. 21, on the band’s Facebook page, Lukather wrote: “It’s been one hell of a ride and YOU all made that happen !! It’s been a joy and honor and you’ll United States of America down the road in a way or another.. not constant.. can’t be any longer.”

Paich returned for a surprise guest appearance on Sept. 20 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles to sing the classic rock favorite, “Africa,” and then the encore, “Home of the Brave.”Exactly one month later, at the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia on Oct. 20, Paich joined his bandmates, including co-founder/keyboardist Steve Porcaro and longtime lead vocalist, Joseph Williams, once more. “He can sing. He’s up and about and he’s happy and he’s walking around. But he’s not built for speed anymore. This kind of lifestyle is way harder than people think it is.”
