Gloria Allred Biography

Gloria Allred [Gloria Rachel Allred] is an American women right’s attorney who often takes controversial cases and high-profile cases, particularly those involving the protection of women’s rights. Allred is best known as a former Court TV anchor. She is also known for We the People With Gloria Allred (2011) and Rat Race (2001). She was previously married to William Allred and Peyton Huddleston Bray, Jr.

She had her high-school education at Philadelphia High School for Girls and after graduating, joined the University of Pennsylvania. There, she met her first first husband, Peyton Bray. They got their first and only child Lisa, on September 20, 1961, but divorced shortly after.

After her divorce from Peyton Bray, she moved back in with her parents and moved on with her education. In 1963, Gloria graduated with honors earning her a bachelor’s degree in English. She wrote her honors thesis on black writers which was against her professor’s strong objections.

She took a job at Benjamin Franklin High School as a teacher after a variety of job trials. On a graduate degree, Gloria began work at New York University, where she became interested in the civil rights movement. After she earned a master’s degree, she became a teacher and, in 1966, moved to Los Angeles, California, and lived in Watts. She worked for the Los Angeles Teachers Association and taught at Jordan High School and Fremont High School.

During a vacation in Acapulco in 1966, Bloom was raped at gunpoint, she describes in her autobiography. She soon discovered that she was pregnant and sought an abortion which was illegal for doctors to perform at the time so she had a back-alley abortion. After the procedure, she began hemorrhaging and became infected, only recovering after being hospitalized. She says that she did not report the rape because she didn’t think anyone would believe her.

Gloria married William Allred, her second husband, in 1968 and enrolled in Southwestern University School of Law. Later, she transferred to Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles. In 1975, Gloria was admitted to the State Bar of California after graduating.

Gloria Allred Legal Career | Gloria Allred Law Firm

Throughout Allred’s Legal career, she has represented a wide variety of clients in civil rights suits that have mostly involved sexual harassment, women’s rights, employment discrimination and wrongful termination. She has been called “a longtime master of the press conference” by the The New Republic. This is because she takes high-profile cases, using press conferences and appearances on television to much effect.

She has had clients filing suits against celebrities, among them are cases against the likes of Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Herman Cain, David Boreanaz, Scott Lee Cohen, Anthony Weiner, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Esai Morales.

In January 1976, she started the Allred, Maroko & Goldberg firm with fellow Loyola graduates Michael Maroko and Nathan Goldberg. Allred also represented seven children and their parents in 1979, in a lawsuit against the Sav-On Drugstore chain to stop the store from designating separate sections for boys and girls toys.

While California State Senator John G. Schmitz was leading hearings on outlawing abortion, in 1981, Allred presented him with a chastity belt. Schmitz retaliated in a press release, calling her a “slick butch lawyeress.” She then sued him for libel, and eventually secured a settlement of $20,000 and an apology.

Together with Catharine MacKinnon in 1985, Allred drafted a version of the Antipornography Civil Rights Ordinance for Los Angeles County. The legislation however failed to pass the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

She has handled quite many cases over the years with the latest being representing at least 28 women who accuse Bill Cosby of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and/or other sexual misconduct. She is also involved in representing three women who accuse Donald Trump of sexual misconduct — claims which Trump has denied, and which first arose during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

In 2017, the State Bar of California opened an investigation into possible misconduct by Allred, and the case was forwarded to the State Bar’s Enforcement Unit for further investigation and possible prosecution. Allred issued a statement denying any wrongdoing and claiming the investigation was sparked by a failed extortion attempt.
