Stan Smith Biography

Stan Smith born Stanley Roger Smith is a former world’s best American tennis player and two-time Grand Slam singles champion. He formed one of the most successful doubles teams of all time with his partner Bob Lutz. Smith’s two major singles titles were the 1971 US Open (over Jan Kodeš in the final), and 1972 Wimbledon (over Ilie Năstase in the final).

In 1972, he was the year-ending world No. 1 singles player. He won his second and last year-end championship title at the Dallas WCT Finals in 1973. He won four Grand Prix Championship Series titles. In a popular brand of tennis shoes, his name is used. In his early years, he improved his tennis game through lessons from Pancho Segura, the Pasadena Tennis Patrons, and the sponsorship of the Southern California Tennis Association headed by Perry T. Jones.

Stan Smith Early Life

Smith grew up in Pasadena, California and was coached mainly by Pancho Segura. He played university tennis at the University of Southern California, under Coach George Toley, where he was a three-time All-American and won the 1968 NCAA Singles Championship just as the 1967 and 1968 Doubles Titles. At USC, Smith was an individual from Beta Theta Pi brotherhood’s Gamma Tau section.

Stan Smith Career

As a kid, he went to get a job as a ball boy for the Davis Cup but was turned down because the organizers thought he was too clumsy. In 1979 in Jack Kramer’s autobiography, the long-time tennis promoter and great player himself ranked Smith as one of the 21 best players of all time.

In 2005, Smith was ranked as 35th in its “40 Greatest Players of the TENNIS Era” by TENNIS magazine. In 1987, Smith was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Smith became active as a Coach for the United States Tennis Association following his playing career. He now has his own Tennis Academy with Billy Stearns called Smith Stearns Tennis Academy, which is on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Smith  and his wife Marjory Gengler, tutored South African tennis player Mark Mathabane, helping increment pressure on the South African government to end Apartheid. In Hilton Head, he likewise is a co-proprietor of the tennis foundation Smith Stearns. He is currently the President of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Stan Smith Net Worth

Adidas

Smith has a tennis shoe line done by Adidas. It is a widely available iconic fashion brand. Since it was released in 1971, by estimates the Stan Smith has sold more than 50 million pairs although the actual figure is likely much more, making it the most popular Adidas trainer of all time.

This decade-crossing organization, its apparently relentless achievement and the far-fetched transformation of Stan Smith from ‘excellent tennis player’ into Stan Smith ‘shoe big shot and companion of Pharrell’ can be credited to a decent lot of ability and a ton of good planning.

At first, the Stan Smith was the Robert Haillet, named after a French player who, in 1965, was selected by Horst Dassler, son of Adi, to front up to the brand’s burgeoning range of tennis shoes. They were gaining an on-court following thanks to their – at the time at least – high-tech leather upper and herringbone rubber sole, making them far more durable and stable than the canvas models on offer from competitors.

By the time Smith was approached by Adidas in 1972, he was a four-time Davis Cup winner as well as the number one singles player in the world, having lost the final of Wimbledon in 1971, but winning that year’s US Open.

The following year he would go all the way at SW19, stepping out in front of 15,000 people on Centre Court and dispatching the early master of what they now call ‘shithousery’, the infamous Romanian, Ilie Năstase in the final.

The first meeting with Horst Dassler took place at 11 pm in a Parisian nightclub during the 1972 French Open. Horst was famous for having meetings late at night. “There were these women in tuxedos and I thought, ‘what am I doing here!?’”

His agent negotiated the picture of his face (ironically taken during a very brief mustache-less period) to appear on the tongue of the shoe, and while the official name change to Stan Smith wouldn’t arrive until 1978, a piece of pop culture history that could never have been predicted was born.
